The Importance of Vitamin C and Vitamin D

People in Boise along with the rest of the world continue to struggle with the fight against Covid-19. As everyone continues to closely monitor Covid-19 and the new strains that continue to threaten the health of many people, there is no better time to take the steps necessary to strengthen your immune system. Studies have shown that nutrition along with dietary supplements play important roles in the health of your immune system. Vitamin C and Vitamin D are key for maintaining your health, including your immune system. Our team at Idaho Chiropractic Group would like to take a look at the importance of Vitamins C and D.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been shown to be the go-to source for strengthening the immune system. Vitamin C is extremely beneficial for the health of leukocytes, which is a type of white blood cell that is essential for fighting infections. It is best to consume foods that are rich in Vitamin C, such as oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes, cranberries, and strawberries. If you aren’t able to get the recommended amount of Vitamin C through your diet, it is recommended that adults take a supplement of 1000mg twice per day.

Vitamin D

The most common way that humans get their Vitamin D is through the sun, but it is a good idea to up the dosage you would generally get through sunlight by taking a supplement. Low levels of Vitamin D have been shown to increase the risk of developing respiratory conditions in both children and adults.

You can also increase your Vitamin D intake by eating cod, salmon, trout, tuna, and mushrooms. If you are considering a Vitamin D supplement, the recommended daily dosage of Vitamin D it's 15-20 mcg/day (600 IU/day) for adults.

Along with getting a daily dose of Vitamin C and Vitamin D, it has been shown that zinc is also beneficial for fighting the Covid-19 virus. Zinc is critical for the normal functioning and development of the cells in your immune system.
